You're looking bayward from Bridgeway, Sausalito's main street, and you're
standing nearly in front of the site that was William Randolph Hearst's
first
choice for what eventually would be San Simeon. About a block to your right
is
the house wherein Jack London supposedly wrote The Sea Wolf. A bit
farther on is the Valhalla, once the domain of Sally Stanford, the
celebrated
madam of San Francisco and, later, mayor of Sausalito. (We'll be walking to
our
left.)
![]() In the right background,
through
a touch of summer fog, is the skyline of San Francisco; in the center,
an
almost subliminal Oakland Bay Bridge and Treasure Island; and on the
left,
Oakland itself. The seagull on the sea lion's aft deck is just visiting. |
